What’s the Best Time for Maternity Photos?

1/1/2021

The direct answer is, between 30 and 36 weeks. This would be into the 7th month but no later than the 8th month. These 6 weeks or so represent the best time to show off a nice round pregnant belly! Obviously, not everybody is made the same way and so these times may be different depending on the person. Typically after the 36 weeks, standing for the photos will become harder on the Mama and may be less comfortable in general.

1. Are you expecting multiple births?

Twins, triplets, or more will make the Mama  more tired then the typical single birth, even though the babies are still weeks away from being born.

Parents of multiple births typically feel ready for “bump photos” as early as their second trimester, beginning with week 15 and ending after week 26.

More babies = more baby bump! And that means your belly will look photo-ready even sooner.

2. Is your pregnancy considered high-risk?

High-risk pregnancies have become more common as medical breakthroughs empower women to choose parenthood later in life. Though most high-risk pregnancies go smoothly, the best time to shoot pregnancy photos if you are high-risk is during your second trimester or between 20 and 27 weeks, depending on how you feel and round your belly is.

3. Are you planning on using these photos as either for social media reveal and/or for printing invitations to the baby shower?

If you are planning to use your maternity photos for bump announcements, baby shower invitations, or any other printed products, you’ll likely want to shoot your maternity session no later than the beginning of your third trimester — during weeks 27 and 28 of the second trimester.

If you are looking for a place in Waterloo Region to print any invites, check out M&T Printing.
As long as the mama still feels comfortable, I am always excited to take your maternity photos—even at the last minute. This can mean that you may not receive the photos until after your baby is born, but I believe it’s better late than never!
